We are pleased to invite you to the 12th European Congress of Internal Medicine, which will take place in Vienna from 14 to 16 May 2027.
Registration opens on 1 February. Early-bird registration costs €320 and includes access to all sessions, coffee breaks and the welcome reception. After 1 April, the fee rises to €450.
If you wish to present a poster, please submit your abstract (maximum 300 words) before 15 March. Authors will be notified of acceptance by 10 April.
Accommodation is not included, but we have reserved a limited number of rooms at the Hotel Astoria at a reduced rate for participants.

Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in elderly surgical patients and is associated with prolonged hospital stay and increased mortality. Despite its clinical significance, preventive strategies remain poorly standardised.
Methods: We conducted a randomised controlled trial involving 412 patients aged over 65 undergoing elective hip replacement. Participants were allocated either to a multicomponent prevention programme (n=206) or to standard care (n=206). The primary outcome was the incidence of POD within seven days of surgery.
Results: POD occurred in 11.2% of the intervention group compared with 19.4% in the control group (p=0.02). Mean hospital stay was reduced by 1.8 days in the intervention group. No significant difference in 30-day mortality was observed between the groups.
Conclusion: A multicomponent prevention programme significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative delirium, although it did not affect short-term mortality.
